DSW - MAY 2025 - "MERCY" - Plan Intro
"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; For his mercy endureth for ever." 1 Chronicles 16:34
It was a brilliantly sunny Sunday morning, and I was in a rush to get to church to finish getting ready for the day's events. There was still much to do before our church family began to arrive, eager to worship in the house of the Lord. As I traveled through town, I saw 2 city police cars parked at an intersection, running radar. "Lord, bless those officers and keep them safe," I prayed aloud as I drove by, glancing in their direction. Turning my eyes back toward the traffic light just ahead of me, I was blinded by the morning sunlight, but could see the light well enough to observe it turning RED as my car traveled through the intersection. WHAT?!?!?! Oh my word!!! I'd just ran the red light with 2 police cars sitting right there!!! In an instant, from the corner of my eye, I saw the blue lights flip on, as one of those young officers took position with his police cruiser in my rear view mirror. Seriously, Melissa! You just ran a red light while whispering a prayer for the officers?!?! I safely pulled over as quickly as I could, pulling out my drivers license from my wallet and digging in the glove box for my insurance card as the young officer approached my now open drivers side window. "Ma'am, do you know why I pulled you over this morning?" he inquired. Placing my drivers license in his open hand, I nervously responded, "Yes sir, I sure do. I just accidentally ran that red light." He looked at me as if to say, "And???..." "The sun glared in my eyes, and I had no sooner looked up than the light flipped to red! I truly didn't mean to run it, Sir." With my license now firmly in hand, turning back towards his police cruiser, he replied, "Yes ma'am, give me just a minute and I'll be back." He walked to his car and got in, leaving the cruiser's door open as he worked on the mounted laptop computer. Keeping my eyes on the rear view mirror, my mind was racing. How does this look? What will my husband say? How will our church family respond to the pastor's wife being pulled over, right in the middle of our small town?? How in the world will I live this down? And, to compound it all, now I'm going to have to pay for a traffic citation!!! I snapped a pic of the scene in my rear view and sent it to my husband with a couple of crying emoji's. He didn't respond. After what seemed an eternity, I heard the the young officer approaching my car again, rapping the heels of his boots on the pavement as he walked. He began to speak. "Ma'am, I pulled you over today for running the red light. Red lights serve the purpose of keeping an intersection safe for all traveling through it, and yellow lights are meant to tell you to stop for the light..." my mind was racing as he spoke, wondering what the cost of the ticket would be, and how much longer I'd be delayed here for my own dumb mistake. Then, my mind was instantly laser focused on his words when I heard him say, "I'm issuing you a warning citation today. Next time, be sure to stop in time for the light for the safety of all involved, or you will be cited for running the light." WHAT?!?! NO CITATION TODAY?!?!? Thankfulness flooded my heart and mind, and as I fought back tears, I thanked the young officer for issuing a warning, telling him that I knew full well that I truly deserved a ticket for running the light. I then proceeded to tell him that I'd actually been calling out to the Lord on his behalf when I first saw his cruiser there, and asked him if I could pray for him now, which he kindly obliged me in as I took his gloved hand in mine and prayed out loud for him. It was a divine encounter.
** MERCY WALKED IN AND PLEADED MY CASE **
This month's plan focuses on the word, "Mercy." It is used more times in God's Word than I can account for, in all translations. As you put pen to paper this month, let your heart ponder the various ways it is used. Allow God to lead your heart and mind to expand your understanding of the richness of His mercy on our lives and eternity. Ponder how MERCY WALKED IN AND PLEADED YOUR CASE for eternal life. You will be blessed even more than I was after inadvertently running the red light and experiencing the mercy of a police officer on my behalf.
~Mel~
** Please note: I write all my plans based from the KJV Holy Bible, so other translations may vary in wording, but should have the same context. Also, I write all my plans for 31 days so they can be used any month of the year. **
