DSW - APRIL 2024 - “THEREFORE: what’s it THERE for?”
Definition: THEREFORE: (adverb): for that reason; consequently. Synonyms: Therefore, wherefore, accordingly, consequently, so, since, & then all introduce a statement resulting from, or caused by, what immediately precedes.
Sometime ago, probably many years now, as a young Christian, I recall a pastor giving this advice in a sermon: “Anytime you see the word THEREFORE, in the Bible, stop yourself and ask what is it THERE for?” I found his advice to be intriguing and began to follow it. This rule of thumb surely does give one reason to pause and think about what the scripture is trying to say in the full context of the given passage. When you come across it in God’s Word, ask yourself the following questions:
—> What precedes the “therefore?”
—> What follows the “therefore?”
—> What is the message relayed in the totality of the passage?
—> What is the life application of this passage (specifically, how does it apply to MY life)?
These are typically good rules of them to follow when studying God‘s word, and this word is just one example of how we can apply these study skills.
As I researched this month’s plan, I found COUNTLESS times the word “therefore” or one of its synonyms is used in God’s Word - and that was only in one translation (KJV)!! One of the first verses that came into my mind before I even began my the search was, “ 1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2. looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2) If you look at the passage preceding these 2 verses, you will see that this is what I like to call the “Heroes of the faith,” passsage. That alone is enough to give me pause, and remind myself of how important Hebrews 12:1-2 is to my life! It is a power passage, no doubt. If you’re not familiar with it, take the time to really dive in and study it, the preceding and following passages. What blessed assurances!!!
I pray you enjoy writing these passages daily as much as I did researching and creating it. Happy writing, and God Bless! ~Mel~
Please note: I write all my plans based off the King James Version of the Holy Bible, so other translations may vary in wording but should have the same context. Also, I write all plans for 31 days so that they can be used any month of the year.
