DSW - AUGUST 2023 - "I AM"
Cartoon character, Popeye the Sailor Man, famously stated, "I yam what I yam an' that's all I yam." As a child, I always found that statement to be odd, because in a sense, it overstated the obvious. It confounded me as I pondered his statement. Of course he was who he was, and that's all he was. How could he be anything other than what he was? I don't think I ever really resolved that conflict in my mind, though I admit to not thinking too deeply on it as I grew older and moved on to more mature, adult topics to ponder, such as those surrounding our topic this month, "I AM."
Not to compare Popeye the Sailor Man to God, but I can't help but wonder if Moses was a bit confounded as well in this passage, "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." Exodus 3:13-14. In my mind, the whole experience had to be quite unsettling as he was tending to his father in law's flock on a mountainside, and a voice called out to him from a burning bush, instructing him to remove his sandals because he was on "holy ground." I would certainly be confounded!! But, as the voice continued, he recognized it to be that of the one, true God, the great "I AM." The voice was that of our loving Heavenly Father. I can't fathom Moses' emotions in that moment.
After I had already created this month's plan, I overheard my husband in a conversation with my son-in-law. Both are ministers of the gospel, and sometimes their conversations can get deep and way over my head. On this day, it caught my attention because they were discussing this very topic, "I AM." They were discussing how those 2 small words, only 3 letters in total, perfectly encompass who God is. He was before time. He is now. He will be forever. He existed before time began, yet created time and stepped into it to be with us. He will forever be, even when time is no more. THOSE are deeply confounding thoughts if we allow our minds to dwell there - certainly much more so than Popeye's statement! But oh, the everlasting promises that live in those 2 tiny words!
