DSW - March 2023 - "Blessings & Curses"
It is so hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner in the southeast of the USA! Warmer temperatures have already been present for some time - flowers are blooming, trees are budding and birds are singing. It's a glorious time of year (that is, unless you have allergies!). God's glory is all around us as we step into the new life Spring brings to our world. Retail establishments are in full regalia with merchandise heralding Spring holidays such as St. Patrick's Day in March and Easter in April. As I was shopping in a discount store recently, I saw a wall plaque for St. Patrick's Day with the words, "Luck of the Irish to you!," and it brought to my remembrance a conversation I had with my daughter over 20 years ago. At that time, the church we attended hosted a revival team from Life Action ministries in a one week revival. During the adult teaching/preaching time, there was a dedicated team who also worked with the youth and children, teaching them. It was a wonderful time of teaching and growth in my faith, and I would soon learn that at least one of my three children (the 4th hadn't been born yet) had also been impacted in a lifelong way! My oldest daughter was 8 or 9 then. She's always been what I call a "wise, old soul," with wisdom beyond her years (she is now 31). As we were doing something one day shortly after the revival, I made an off the cuff remark about someone having "good luck." My wise old owl daughter looked at me and said, "Mom, there's no such thing as luck. Only blessings and curses!" OUCH...that cut! "You're right," I replied. "Where did you learn that?" "At the revival at church," she responded. Even now, well over 20 years later, this conversation comes back to my mind if I ever slip up and remark about "luck" or someone "being lucky." My daughter was so right. There truly is no such thing as "luck." God's divine hand guides our steps every day of our lives, and the Bible has MUCH to say about blessings and curses!
Some of the first blessings & curses we read about in the Bible come from the Old Testament, one of the foremost and most familiar passages being the covenant the Lord made with Abraham, “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3 KJV) To this day, we still live under these words! Abram/Abraham's life was great evidence of God's blessings and curses, and our lives are evidence of His hand of providence as well. As I pondered "blessings and curses," a word study brought MANY, MANY scriptures about them: the Bible is abundant with scripture about "blessings and curses." This month's scripture writing assignments are evidence of that, but just barely scratches the surface! My hope & prayer is that these scriptures will only whet your appetite for the Word and that you will dive even deeper into God's Word about these topics.
Happy Writing!!
** Please note: my plans are written based on the King James version of the Holy Bible. Other translations may vary in their wording, but have the same meaning. Also, I write all my plans for 31 days so that they may be used any month of the year. **
